Chevy & GMC SUV Towing Guide

Chevy/GMC SUV Towing Guide - Germain GM
The versatility of SUVs has always been a major selling point of these do-anything vehicles. But different models have different capabilities, and while things like the number of seats is easy enough to tell at a glance, for things like towing capacity, it’s really helpful to have a guide. Fortunately, that’s just what you’ve found here.

Chevrolet Equinox

2024 Chevrolet Equinox

Not every compact SUV is rated for towing, and the segment as a whole is sometimes overlooked as a result. But the Equinox offers a 1,500-pound towing capacity as well as far more cargo space than you would expect from a compact SUV. Power comes from a punchy 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that gives the Equinox plenty of pep. The Equinox maintains the title of best-selling Chevrolet SUV by offering a tremendous value for money. And in a field as competitive as compact SUVs, value for money is an irreplaceable quality. You even get standard features that the competition doesn’t offer, like Active Noise Cancellation.

GMC Terrain

2024 GMC Terrain

The GMC Terrain brings a sense of style to the compact segment. The Terrain is built on the same platform as the Chevy Equinox, and it uses the same engine, so as far as towing capacity, the two offer the same advantage. But the Terrain is a distinctly different vehicle, and one look at the styling will tell you that. The Terrain offers two more specialized trims. The first of these is the AT4, which is made for offroad use, with equipment like all-terrain tires and skid plates coming standard. Then there’s the luxury Denali trim, which comes with high-end features like a heated steering wheel, a premium Bose stereo, and a head-up display.

Chevrolet Traverse Towing

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

The Traverse has always been an exceptionally good option for a three-row SUV, offering a maximum of interior space from an exterior that’s still small enough to fit easily in a garage. While it has always filled its role as a people hauler well, the Traverse has evolved into a more capable machine across a broader range of purposes. The Z71 trim is an offroad-ready version, something not offered on previous trims. The performance-oriented RS trim adds even more style and visual flair to the already stylish design. The Traverse is more powerful than ever as well, and that means a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. And there’s lots of room inside for cargo as well, further cementing the Traverse’s status as an incredibly versatile SUV.

GMC Acadia

2024 GMC Acadia

The Acadia is a mainstay of the GMC fleet and a hugely popular model thanks to its combination of versatility and premium interior. The current generation of the Acadia is the biggest and most powerful ever, giving it impressive cargo and towing capacities. And even if you need to get your cargo somewhere offroad, the Acadia AT4 is much better equipped for offroad duty than you would expect from such a comfortable vehicle. There are skid plates, eight different drive modes, and offroad-tuned suspension. And as with other GMC models, the Denali trim offers the sort of luxury that raises the bar for the whole segment. That means things like heated and ventilated front seats, standard heated 2nd-row seats, and a long list of signature Denali styling touches. And for your towing needs, things like Hitch View and Hitch Guidance are standard on most trims.

Chevrolet Tahoe

2024 Chevrolet Tahoe

When you have serious towing needs, you need a serious towing vehicle. A lot of people will turn to a pickup truck in these situations, since there aren’t too many truck-based SUVs on the market anymore. But there’s no pickup you can buy that will seat 8, and the Tahoe will do just that while also offering a towing capacity that rivals a significant portion of the pickup market. The interior of the Tahoe is immense, with even third-row legroom that rivals even what you’ll find in a lot of 2nd-row seating on competing SUVs. The towing capacity varies depending on which engine you opt for, but the difference between the three isn’t large enough to be a major factor when choosing an engine for most buyers. And if you need even more interior space, there is the Suburban, which offers the same towing capacities with the same engines, but comes with more cargo space behind the third row of seats, for a total of 144.7 cubic feet.

GMC Yukon

2024 GMC Yukon

The Yukon is the flagship of the GMC SUV fleet. Not only does it offer the most power, the most offroad ability, and the biggest interior, but it also offers the most towing capacity. The Yukon is mechanically similar to the Chevy Tahoe, but again we see an entirely different vehicle built on the same platform. While the Denali trim level is used across the GMC lineup, the Yukon is the only GMC SUV to offer a Denali Ultimate trim. This ultra-luxury trim comes with touches like Adaptive Air Ride suspension, a panoramic power sunroof, and an impressive 18-speaker Bose premium stereo system. It even comes with GM’s Super Cruise driver assistance technology, which is a hands-free form of cruise control that lets you sit back and relax for those long highway towing trips. GMC also took a simpler approach to naming the bigger version of the Yukon than Chevrolet did with the Tahoe and Suburban. The bigger Yukon is just known as the Yukon XL.
